Maranhao

A map of Maranhao, showing where it is in Brazil
Maranhao is in the North East of Brazil with dense forests and barren beaches. The ecological importance of sand dunes in the area means many beaches are protected. Similarly, the state capital of San Luis is a UNESCO world heritage site. The state has a long colonial history and changed hands many times between Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands. Many of the forests in the state have been destroyed for farming purposes. Both wet and dry seasons are extremely hot with high levels of humidity. Unfortunately, Maranhao is one of the poorest states in Brazil.
