A map of China showing where Gansu is

Gansu is the NW corridor into China bordered by mountains and the Gobi desert. It is a natural route for the overland silk trade. Today, the province is quite rural, with only a 32 percent urban population. The capital is Lanzhou and the main industries are grain production, coal and mining. The cool, dry climate and natural caves are a major tourist attraction.
