Sichuan means four rivers and the province is a natural basin surrounded by mountains. The province is the rice bowl of China and is about the same size as France, but with a much higher population. The province has a warm climate and plentiful supply of water. The size and population of the province led to it splitting from Chongqing in 1997. The province is 36 percent urban and the capital city is Chengdu.
