Ceara is a state that is famous for being the first to remove and outlaw slavery. It was also home to a large resistance fighting force during the battle for independence from Portugal. Today, there is some tourism to the state and part of it sits within the Brazilian highlands. Scrubby forests are common landscapes and the state can suffer intense dry periods at times. The climate is humid at the coast but dryer as you head further inland. Despite this, the temperature is always hot. The average noon temperature in Ceara is 36 degrees Celsius. The economy is primarily made up of the service sector.
