A map of Espirito Santo, showing where it is in Brazil

Espirito Santo is a coastal state known for its sand dunes, beaches and ports. Today the state has a range of peoples, cultures and religions. Throughout history the state was originally home to various nomadic tribes. The climate is tropical with a dry winter and wet summer. A mountainous core to the state means temperatures drop dramatically further inland. The population is mainly urban, with 80% of the population living in cities. This is reflected with the service industry being the largest part of the economy.
