Rondonia is in the North West of Brazil with an international border with Bolivia. This state encompasses most of the Amazon rainforest. Due to this, colonial peoples rarely ventured into the dense vegetation. Mainly, the population was composed of Jesuits, bandits and indigenous peoples. The rubber rush raised the population some what but not significantly. The state capital Porto Velho began as a village for workers building a railway. Today, the state suffers from intense deforestation, overpopulation and excessive agriculture.
