After the overthrowing of Pedro II by military forces, Brazil was declared a republic. This was a slight misnomer as the country was ruled as a military dictatorship until protests forced a transition to civilian presidents. A military coup occured in 1964 but democracy returned in 1985.

Across the next 20 years some turmoil and financial crises impacted Brazil’s ability to develop its culture and industries. Major events in recent years have helped the country boost its image on a global scale such as the 2014 soccer world cup and the 2016 summer olympics. In 2011, Brazil’s first female president came to power.
