Fry Word List - Kindergarten

contributed by Leanne Guenther

Fry sight words are a list of the most frequently used words in the English language. In kindergarten, students are usually introduced to the first seven or eight flashcards from the Fry First 100 Word List, which are the flashcards I've included on this page. These words are important for students to learn as they form the foundation for reading and writing.

To use Fry sight words in kindergarten, teachers may introduce the words through games, flashcards, and other fun activities. They may also encourage students to practice the words through repetition, spelling exercises, and reading exercises. It's important for teachers to ensure that students are mastering each word before moving on to the next one.

Overall, using Fry sight words in kindergarten is an effective way to help students build their reading and writing skills. By mastering these essential words, students can improve their vocabulary and become more confident readers and writers. All children progress at their own pace so this is only a suggested number of sight words to introduce in kindergarten.

Dolch words

preschool dolch list flashcardsDolch words are intended for children preschool through grade 3.  Fry words are intended for grades 1 through 6.

As a mom, I actually found it easier to teach the Dolch words in preschool and kindergarten and then transition to the Fry words from grade 1 to 4.  There's a bit of overlap, but I didn't find this to be a problem. In grade 5 and 6, I picked and chose from all the lists based on which words my children were struggling with.

I had access to my kids at an early age (something their elementary school teachers didn't have!) -- by elementary school, I didn't have as much time with them because they were in class .  For my girls anyways, they seemed to catch onto things and be excited to learn in preschool/kindergarten so we made it about halfway through the sight words before they started grade one.  By grade three or so, flash cards with boring old mom was a lot less exciting than going biking with their friends! Don't get frustrated. Everyone learns at their own pace.

High Five Sight Words:

You can also trace your child's hand on construction paper and glue these flash cards into the center of the hand. Hang these on the fridge or your word wall. When your child is in the mood, have them read the word on the handprint and give the hand a High Five!

Six per page Flashcards - Fry First 100

I like to introduce the sheets one at a time.  Once a child has mastered reading the sheet, I move on to the next one.  After a week -- about one sheet per day -- the children should be introduced to four or five sheets.  At this point, I introduce the dotted line (trace) sheets and the picture clue nouns and we keep playing with those for another three weeks (so the five sheets last about a month of teaching time).  The kids can practice printing the words and arranging them in sentences or short phrases. Try to aim for about 50 words or the first seven flashcards during Kindergarten.
