Nunavut, Canada
Nunavut is the eastern-most Canadian territory. Iqaluit is the capital city. Up until, 1999 Nunavut didn't exist. On April 1, 1999, the eastern portion of the Northwest Territories was carved out and the territory of Nunavut was born. The Territorial Flag
The flag has a yellow background on the left and white on the right with a blue star and red inuksuk in the center. An inuksuk is a stone monument which is used to guide people and mark special or sacred places.
The single star represents the north star – known as Niqirtsuituq in the native tongue.
Adopted on April 1, 1999 when the territory of Nunavut was formed.
The Territorial Flower
Purple saxifrage is a low-growing alpine plant that flowers right after the snow melts (April in mountain regions and June in the arctic). During the blooming period, there is a mass of pink or purple cup shaped blooms and small silvery leaves.
The Territorial Bird
The Rock Ptarmigan (“Lagopus mutus”) is a small grouse also known as the snow chicken. Rock ptarmigans feed on leaves, buds, fruits and seeds and on some insects in the summer. The female lays 6 to 9 eggs in a leaf-lined hollow on the ground.
