Math Times Tables

Age Rating

All children develop as individuals.  Parents and caregivers should use the age ratings below as a general guideline, taking the abilities, temperament and interests of their children into account.

Math Times Tables are intended for grade two or three students but parents can begin introducing them earlier if their children show an interest in numbers.

Introduction

OK... my number one advice to parents with children just starting to learn math is to work on those basic facts.  It's similar to the importance of reading with your children at an early age to help them develop their language arts skills.  The more complicated parts of math are so much easier to learn and quicker to accomplish when children have memorized their times tables!

In order to tie together the theory of multiplication with "memorizing" times tables, try introducing the sheets in conjunction with egg carton exercises.

Egg Carton Exercise:  Take an empty egg carton and a pile of pennies or unpopped popcorn.  "Create" each line of the times table and count out the solution.  For example, for 4 x 2 =... fill 4 egg carton cups with 2 pennies each.  Then count how many pennies you have in total.  The pennies can go in their piggy bank as a reward when you're done.  Or you can pop your popcorn kernels for a little reward snack.  You can also do the exercise with treats like raisins, smarties or M&M's.  When they've done a few they can eat the smarties!  Tip:  if your child is a "sorter", keep the smarties all the same colour as it confuses some children when you use mixed colours to practice math -- they don't see 8 smarties, they see 2 red, 3 pink, a yellow and 2 brown.  Happily, this natural skill likely means they'll be pretty good at math!

Take breaks, when necessary.  Choose a time of day when you and the child are relaxed.  Provide rewards (verbal encouragement, little treats, gold stars on "chore chart" checklists or awards for tasks that have been mastered) and change up the rewards when needed.  Don't underestimate the "reward value" of one-on-one time with a loved grown up!  Ten minutes of "homework time" with daddy after work can become a special ritual for both father and child.
