Cats: General

Cats are warm blooded mammals that come in lots of different sizes and can be found all over the world.

Cats have a double layer of fur all over their body that protects them from getting cold or wet.  The outside layer of their hair is called the guard hair – these hairs are quite long and coarse.

The inner layer of fur is much softer and finer, and is called the under fur.

Cats have sensitive whiskers that can feel things just like your fingertips can. Their whiskers help them judge the width of spaces they are trying to squeeze into and help them to feel their way around in the dark.

Cats have a tongue that is rough like sandpaper. They use it to groom themselves and each other. They also use their rough tongues to pull the last bits of meat off the bones of their prey.
