Photo:  Potash Mining

Grain farming is the main industry in Saskatchewan, but other industries include mining, meat processing, electricity production, and petroleum refining.   The main types of mining are potash, uranium and coal.

I think potash mines are actually quite pretty.  They sprout up in the middle of a farmer's field after kilometers of flat land.  And there are always big pink piles of rock beside them.

Canada is the world's major producer of potash.  It is mainly used to make fertilizer.

Trains come to pick up the potash (just like they do with the grain).  They deliver the potash around North America or to boats for shipment overseas.

You can see how big the pile of pink rock is compared to the train (yes, it's a REAL train not a toy one *grin*).
