Rio Grande do Norte Map

A map of Rio Grande do Norte, showing where it is in Brazil

Rio Grande do Norte is the North Eastern most tip of South America. It is known for its kilometer long beaches and clean air. It is a site of many colonial conflicts between Portugal, France and the Netherlands. Portuguese forces made alliances with indigenous peoples in the area to defeat the Dutch and regain control. The majority of the state is quite arid with huge sand dunes that cover historical forests. Today, mangrove swamps and rainforests can be found far inland.
