Xinjiang means new territory and it is one of China’s autonomous regions. The province is extremely large, approximately the same size as Mexico. The Silk Road passes through the province, a historically important trading route. The province is dominated by desert and is one of the lowest points on Earth. It is exceedingly ethnically diverse with major industries including textiles and agriculture. The capital is Urumqi and the province is 39 percent urban.
