Scotland is the most northerly of the countries in the UK. Its main industries are tourism, services and oil and gas. The North Sea to the East has large supplies of fossil fuels which peaked in the late 1900s. The country is sparsely populated with the highland mountains and heathland largely empty. Parts of the capital Edinburgh are world heritage sites. Scotland has a large independence movement and its own parliament with some powers devolved from the UK government. The two largest cities Glasgow and Edinburgh are very close to each other and sit in the lowlands closer to the English border. Scotland also has a large number of islands to the North and West which can often only be reached by boat.
