KidZone Geography: China

Climate

The size of China means that there are a huge variety of climates across the breadth of the country. Some of the most influential of these include the monsoon, deserts in the North of the country and mountains in the South West.

China is dominated by monsoon cycles that create wet and dry periods across the year. On a larger scale, the North of the country experiences extremely cold winters, where snow falls on sand dunes in the desert. However, very hot summers coincide with the rainy season and temperatures may hit 38 degrees Celsius.

Central China is dominated by the Yangtze river making it an extremely humid region. It can be just as cold as in the North and extremely wet any time but in the summer. The South is extremely hot in summer and can be struck by Typhoons between July and September. Finally, the North West is its own little climate region as this is where the Gobi desert occurs. Maximum temperatures in this location can reach 47 degrees Celsius.
