KidZone Geography: China
Habitats
China is so large that there are many different habitats across the entire country. This means there are a large number of unique and special animals that inhabit the country. Some of these are more well known that others, often due to them being endangered.
One of the most famous of these animals is the Giant Panda, native to the South West region of China, this large bear survives mainly on a diet of bamboo. It is considered a national treasure and very few remain in the wild. Similarly, the Yangtze River Dolphin is one of the remaining freshwater dolphins in the world. Unfortunately, pollution, fishing and development have caused degredation and reduced the numbers of the dolphin in the world.
With up to 100 animals only found in China, the country represents a large and important part of life on Earth. Fast development and urbanisation have led to some loss of habitat, which may be detrimental in the future. Animals are losing their habitat and some on the endangered species list are in serious threat of extinction. Some like the Giant Panda have specific programs in zoos across the world meant to increase population.
