Alagoas

Alagoas Map

A map of Alagoas, showing where it is in Brazil

Alagoas is a popular tourist destination in the North East of Brazil. One of its borders is entirely composed of the Sao Francisco River. Early in the states history, pirates often invaded in search for wood. Sugar plantations began to be established and Dutch colonials took control of the area to capitalise on trade. Today, Alagoas is one of the poorest states with beaches, rolling hills, reefs and lagoons. Inland is a little different with dry scrubland. The economy is mainly service based but with a good industry and agriculture sector.
